The psychology of difficult conversations and emotion-filled encounters

General

A huge range of organizational situations are emotion laden. Such are the cases when a manager must inform different factors, subordinates and superiors alike, about unwanted situations and events that have significance for the individual and/or the organization. For example, a manager may have to notify an employee that he is being dismissed or not promoted or he must notify his superiors about a failure or problem. Similarly, interviews and investigations are often situations in which emotion is a "central player". Accordingly, coping with such situations requires good understanding of the psychological environment surrounding the event, including the possible implications that the situation may have both for the factors directly involved and for other factors witnessing the situation.

The objective of the workshop is to instruct and prepare managers for these types of encounters through lectures about the psychology of difficult conversations and emotion-filled encounters, exercises and simulations. A preliminary organizational analysis for the purpose of customizing the workshop to the needs of the organization ordering the workshop is available.

Emotional responses - factors, characteristics and implications

Emotion-filled encounters - preparation ahead of time, managing the meeting, control over the direct and indirect implications

Simulations of emotion-filled encounters - difficult conversation, braking bad news, inquiries
